FL Keys residents celebrate Conch Republic
KEY LARGO, Fla. (AP) - Florida Keys residents and visitors are wrapping up a 10-day celebration commemorating the 30th anniversary of the subtropical island chain's "secession" from the United States. Activities concluding Sunday mark the birth of the Conch Republic after a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint was established at the top of the Florida Keys Overseas Highway. Community leaders protested in 1982 by "seceding" and proclaimed the Keys an independent country. In Key Largo Friday evening, organizers say about 144 conch shell blowers gathered to break a 2009 record for the most people simultaneously tooting a conch shell. On Key West's Duval Street Saturday, a bed race was billed as "the most fun you can have in bed with your clothes on."
